Carmen came to SafeHaven seeking counseling for the mental and physical abuse she was experiencing from her husband. After meeting with her counselor, we determined that Carmen and her children were in immediate danger at home and needed to come to emergency shelter. Carmen made a plan, and the next day she and her five kids came to shelter with a duffle bag full of clothes and medication. Carmen was determined to use every resource she could while at SafeHaven, and since then, all of her children have participated in every support group, counseling session and camp we have held, and Carmen has been seeking a job to support her family. Carmen worked hard to gain independence in shelter, and she and her five children are now ready to take the next step and move into an apartment with our Transitional Housing program. Carmen and her kids are excited to have their own place and build a new future free from domestic violence.
